Mudros, Armistice of
The Mudros Armistice between Great Britain and the Ottoman Empire on 30 October 1918 was in effect an Ottoman surrender at the end of World War I. It led to the subsequent end of the Ottoman Empire and the creation of the modern Republic of Turkey. After the armistice was signed, British troops continued to advance into the Ottoman vilayet (province) of Mosul, or what subsequently became northern Iraq. This situation led to the British-Turkish dispute over Mosul, which was finally resolved by the decision of the Council of the League of Nations in 1926 to award the vilayet and its mainly Kurdish population to Britain and thus Iraq.
